Description

EMAB 1962, p.23. At rear of shop selling hardware opp. Red Lion Inn; small courtyard with 18th c. house facing. In courtyard pieces of carved medieval masonry probably from Flawford (1). Site visit by HER in 2018 identified the likely courtyard opposite the Red Lion. Framwork knitters cottage likely to be the 18th c. house. Courtyard modernised and no trace of medieval masonry. Site visit also identified the site of the previous Red Lion Inn as Red Lion Cottage, 9 Vicarage Lane (2). On the 10/07/2018 D.Littlewood and E.Firth visited Ruddington to establish the location of the courtyard opposite the Red Lion Inn containing medieval masonry reported in the EMAB 1962, p.23 at Ruddington. The current Red Lion Inn has been so-named for 100 years and prior to that the site at 9 Vicarage Lane was called the Red lion Inn. DL and EF then visited 9 Vicarage Lane but were unable to gain access, but noted that the walls were now rendered so were unable to view any datable brickwork. (2)
