Description

A 'Dutch Head' type auger was used with up to 4m of extension rods. Auger holes were drilled every 100m along the transect line. Transect 1 showed a decreasing thickness of peat from west to east away from the river, which by Core 3 was only a peaty topsoil. The peats were replaced eastward by floodplain sand and gravel. A gravel island at the edge of the floodplain could be assoicated with Roman pottery found in this area.
