Description
The proposed development occupies three fields at Blackberry Farm to the north of Cotgrave in Nottinghamshire. The fields cover approximately 12.1 hectares and lie on the west side of Main Road, Cotgrave, and approximately 7.2 km to the southeast of the centre of Nottingham. The site lies in a rural area characterised by scattered farmsteads and villages, and is overlooked by both the spoil heap from the colliery and Windmill Hill. The fields are currently in agricultural use for pasture, bounded by mature hedgerows with occasional trees. The site is bounded to the east by Main Road.
The survey was carried out using a Bartington Grad601 Magnetometer, a type of equipment that works by detecting variations in the earth’s magnetic field. Each survey area was divided into 30m square grids set along a common alignment.
Within each grid, parallel traverses 1m apart were walked at rapid pace along the same orientation. Instrument readings were logged at 0.25m intervals, with an average cycle of 4 using an ST1 internal sample trigger.
In the first field , three linear features visible at the northern end of the field appear to relate to either agricultural drainage or land divisions, and are likely to be relatively recent in origin. Similarly plough marks visible further to the south appear relatively modern in origin.
The second field recorded plough marks may be remnants of buried medieval ridge and furrow remains, although this is speculative. The first two fields appear to have undergone relatively intense improvement.
In the third field, there is clearer evidence of potential medieval ridge and furrow remains surviving at sub-surface levels, possible including an associated field boundary or trackway. The remnants of a former field boundary were also identified.
