Description

The site is located at Farndon Recreation Ground, a c.4ha plot of land fronting onto the A46 Fosse Road. The proposed new pavilion is to be at the southeast end of the recreation ground. A programme of archaeological monitoring and recording was conducted as part of ground reduction works for a car park and the excavation of foundation trenches for the new building, a soakaway and an access road. Particular attention was paid to the inspection of topsoil and subsoil contexts due to the potential for recovery of lithic scatters. No archaeologically significant deposits, features or finds were exposed during the monitoring of the groundworks. However, a medieval sherd and a large sherd of Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age pottery were recovered during the evaluation phase from the subsoil, possibility indicating some potential for later prehistoric activity in the vicinity of the site.
