Description
The site lies 3.75km west of the centre of Hickling as defined by the village hall. The total area of the site is 2.5ha, encompassing one field. The site is bounded by Melton Road to the north and east and the A46 to the west.
A magnetic gradiometry survey was carried out with a Bartington Grad 601-2 fluxgate magnetometer. The field was divided into 40m2 grids using a survey grade GPS, and each grid was walked systematically in a zigzag pattern, taking readings every 0.25m in traverses 1m apart.
The survey data has captured a few anomalies with no clear archaeological activity. It is possible that any archaeological remains may be masked by the strong magnetic disturbance, relating to modern dumping, in the west of the site, but otherwise, only agricultural activity corresponding to probable ridge and furrow of the medieval field system has been identified.
