Description

The development site lies on the southeast side of Ollerton, with New Ollerton, the former mining village developed following the closure of the mines in the mid 1990s, lying to the north. The site lies on the northern side of Wellow Road, which extends from Ollerton to Wellow and eventually to Newark. To the north lies part of Ollerton Pits Wood, which was developed on the former mines. The development site is an approxiamtely rectangular plot of roughly 5.5 hectares, which has been broken down into three phases of development. The trenches were spaced at approximately equal distances across the entire area investigated by geophysical survey. All seven renches were 20m in length and 2m wide. The trial trench evaluation has produced an entiely negative result where no significant archaeological remains were identified. Low numbers of post-medieval/modern ceramic artefacts were recovered from surface or residual contexts, but the finds are insignificant.
