Abstract/Summary
An archaeological trial trench evaluation was carried out ahead of a residential development on land north of Wellow Road, Ollerton.
The evaluation formed a third phase of investigation, following desk-based assessment and geophysical survey. Both previous investigations suggested that the archaeological potential of the site was low.
There are no known archaeological remains within the site itself, although a scatter of worked flints indicates prehistoric activity in the surrounding area. Crop marks thought to indicate a Roman marching camp lie less than 150m to the southeast, and about 1km west of the site, the A614 follows the approximate line of a former Roman Road. The site remained on the outskirts of the medieval villages of Ollerton, and historic mapping confirms it had not been previously developed. 20th century mining activities did not extend into the site.
The trial trench evaluation has produced an entirely negative result where no significant archaeological remains were identified. Low numbers of post-medieval/modern ceramic artefacts were recovered from surface or residual contexts, but the finds are insignificant.
