Description

The field now called Owl's Nest lies to the west of Keyworth village centre, in the group of fields in the angle between Bunny Lane/Keyworth Lane to the north, and Wysall Road to the west. It is approximately 5.5 hectares (13.6 acres), and is bordered on all sides by other field margins and, at its north-eastern edge by the Sewage Works (built in the 1960’s) It has been arable land since the 1950’s and is regularly ploughed, which is advantageous for repeat metal-detecting at intervals. On the field a 100x100 metre grid area was marked out (20x20 metre grid sections, marked with canes featuring coloured tape) using a 100m open reel surveyors tape. The grid area was transposed onto the field survey map, and the location of the finds recorded on the map as they were found. The finds were bagged, numbered and their location noted on site. The finds were later cleaned and identified, the identity and find number being written on the relevant finds container. The photographs of the grid area, and the finds recovered, were taken onsite, with further photographs taken after cleaning. In 1999/2000 the metal detecting equipment used were a C Scope 1220, a Laser Rapier and a Whites machine providing a search frequency range between 10 - 17 kHz. In 2003/4 the metal detecting equipment used were a Minelab Explorer, a Laser Rapier and a Whites machine providing a search frequency range between 1.5 - 17 kHz. In 2012 and again in 2013 the equipment used was two XP Deus metal detectors and one XP Goldmax metal detector, providing us with a search frequency range of 4-18 kHz. Between 1999 and 2000, 87 metal artefacts were recovered. In 2004, 99 finds were recovered. In 2012, 47 artefacts were recovered. In 2013, 54 metal artefacts were recovered.
