The proposed development site comprises a parcel of land at the intersection of the Fosse Road and Lodge Lane. The proposed development site comprises the site of a former 19th century farmstead with a combined former Farmhouse and outbuilding along with a further detached outbuilding and other modern storage buildings. The village of Elston lies approximately 1km to the east of this proposed development site, within the modern civil parish of the same name, administrative district of Newark and Sherwood, county of Nottinghamshire. The proposed development site is situated within an undulating upland area, which overlooks a south-east facing river terrace and the valley of the River Trent further to the north-west. The specification or written scheme of investigation for this archaeological evaluation had originally provided for the excavation under archaeological supervision of a single archaeological trial trench to a length of 20.0m by 1.60m in width. However, because of spatial restrictions at the site, the archaeological trial trench was excavated to a final length of 18.0m and to a width of 1.20m. These same considerations also necessitated the slight shifting of the trench to the north-east. This archaeological field assessment did not identify any archaeological activity on this proposed development site and there were no finds. The findings from this archaeological evaluation consisted of a site deposit sequence, which comprised a modern compacted yard surface that was made up of modern hardcore, which overlay an underlying natural horizon of reddish clay, which extended to the base of the excavations.
