Description

The site is situated c.1.5km southeast of the centre of the town on the east side of Bowbridge Road. It measures approximately 2.2 hectares and comprises open ground with a public footpath running through it. The evaluation methodology involved the excavation of twelve trenches, each measuring 50m long by 1.8m wide. In each trench, all topsoil, subsoil and underlying non archaeological deposits were removed by mechanical excavator fitted with a toothless bucket. This was undertaken in spits of 0.1m thickness until the first archaeological horizon or natural geology, whichever was encountered first. The only features identified on the site were two undated parallel linear gullies. They do not correspond with any features shown on historic mapping and as such their date and interpretation remains unclear. No other finds or features were recorded on the site, indicating a negligible potential for the proposed development area.
