Description
The single test pit measuring 2m x 2m was excavated at the north-west corner of the redevelopment site. Space at this location was limited by existing drains and the need to keep the path clear, so the pit was positioned within the only available space. A machine was used to break through modern tarmac; the rest of the trench was excavated by hand. This phase of work is for an extension to existing buildings, and the test pit was excavated within the footprint of the proposed new build. The test pit revealed at least three structural phases in this area, with associated demolition and occupation layers. The precise dating of the walls could not be ascertained, although pottery and ceramic building material from surrounding contexts suggests that they date from the 18th-20th centuries.
