Description

The site is in the centre of the village of Egmanton, on the north side of Kirton Road. It is bounded by existing residential plots to the north, east and west, and to the south by Kirton Road. The site slopes downwards from north to south on a slight gradient. The scheme of archaeological works involved the monitoring of all ground disturbances, with the ability to stop and fully record archaeological features. All groundworks were carried out using a 5-tonne Bobcat E50 mechanical excavator fitted with a toothless bucket, except for the removal of modern wall which necessitated the use of a toothed bucket. The scheme of groundworks first involved the removal of topsoil and underlying material across the site to level the area. This area extended to 172.79m2 and necessitated the removal of the foundations of the former extension demolished prior to these works. The foundations of the new extension were then excavated. The footing trench had a total length of 30m, measured 0.6m wide and c.1m deep and abutted the northern face of the existing dwelling. This scheme of archaeological monitoring did not identify any archaeological finds, features or deposits. The sequence comprised an alluvial layer over the natural bedrock geology, representing flooding from a watercourse running through the village a short distance to the south of the site. The alluvial layer was sealed by a series of made ground layers, likely to be associated with the construction of the cottage and its former rear extension. There was no evidence for activity associated with the scheduled motte and bailey castle immediately to the north of the site.
