Abstract/Summary
An scheme of archaeological monitoring and recording to satisfy a condition of planning consent for an extension to an existing dwelling, on land at Summer Well, Kirton Road, Egmanton, Nottinghamshire.
The village appears as a small settlement in the Domesday Book of 1086 under the ownership of Roger de Bully, populated by 22 villagers, and also included two mills. To the immediate northeast of site lies the Scheduled Monument of Gaddick Hill motte and bailey castle, which became disused by the 13th century.
Monitoring entailed initial site preparation works, comprising ground reduction across the proposed development area and removal of a former extension, followed by excavation of foundation trenches for the new extension.
The scheme of archaeological monitoring identified no archaeological features. The sequence of deposits comprised topsoil over made ground layers, sealing an alluvial deposit and the natural bedrock geology.
