Description

The development area is located to the northwest of East Bridgford, Nottinghamshire, immediately south of the River Trent. The site comprises an area of rough pasture in the floodplain of the River Trent. A programme of archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken on all groundworks undertaken in relation to the installation of the installation of five 4m by 4m square drive shafts along the route of a new pipeline at East Bridgford Sewage Treatment Works. No archaeologically significant deposits or features were exposed during the monitoring of the groundworks. The pits only exposed a sequence of topsoil over alluvial floodplain deposits, probably representing successive episodes of overbank flooding. A gravel layer at the base of the deepest pit may be a former gravel terrace. This possible terrace was sealed by blue/grey silts, which may represent high energy flood events with material being deposited in a reduced oxygen environment, with the overlying brown silts being deposited in an oxidised atmosphere. No finds were recovered to date these events, and no organic material was noted that would allow for scientific dating.
