Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief, comprising the monitoring of groundworks associated with the installation of five 4m by 4m square drive shafts was conducted along the route of a new pipeline at East Bridgford Sewage Treatment Works. The development area was within an area of rough pasture that forms part of the River Trent floodplain. Prehistoric activity has been identified in the vicinity, as well as the possible course of the Streete Way Roman road. It was also believed that there could be the remains of medieval and post-medieval riverside structures including wharfs or crossing structures, and unstratified finds deposited by the river. Archaeological potential within the fields north and south of Trent Lane was assessed as moderate for the medieval and postmedieval periods. No archaeologically significant features or deposits were encountered. The sequence comprised topsoil over alluvial deposits typical of a floodplain environment. A possible gravel terrace was recorded at the base of a pit.
