Description
The development site comprises an area of hard-standing and lawn to the east of the house at 9, Rectory Place which also contains a small outbuilding and sheds.
The site lies within the historic core of Barton in Fabis, within which are a number of listed buildings and a Scheduled Monument.
The proposed development area on land at 9 Rectory Place, Barton in Fabis, had the potential to reveal archaeology relating to Iron Age, Roman, Medieval and Post-Medieval-Industrial activities.
The southern area of the development was excavated, under constant archaeological supervision, down to the natural sands and gravels (between 0.47m-1.08m) using a tracked machine with a 1.6m flat bladed ditching bucket.
Excavation of the northern area of the site, containing the footings of the proposed new dwelling, began with a machine with a 0.6m flat bladed ditching bucket. However, excavation was halted after the water table was breached and the trench (length 2.1m, depth 1.2m) flooded.
Once the client had reassessed the site and development, work resumed on a much shallower foundation (approx. 0.5m beneath the existing ground levels) of compacted aggregate and a concrete raft across the whole footprint of the proposed new dwelling.
Excavation of the new footings were done by a tracked machine with a 1.6m flat bladed ditching bucket under constant archaeological supervision.
Archaeological deposits were recorded comprising three ditches and single pit. However, no dateable material was recovered to provide information on their date or function. The similarities of colour and composition between the primary and upper fills of each feature, and the absence of any clear relationships in plan or section suggests they were probably infilled during the same event and are broadly contemporary.
One of the ditches was cut by an early modern drain and the Ordnance Survey maps of 1900 and 1913
contain no evidence for the features suggesting they could pre-date 1900 however, the distinctive loosely compacted fills of all the features indicates that they are probably relatively recent.
