Description
The proposed development site at 5 Moor Lane comprises an area of approximately 0.69 hecatres located towards the centre of the village, on the north side of Moor Lane and approximately 80m east of the junction of that road with the A46.
A single trench measuring 1.8m wide and c. 15m in length was excavated at 5 Moor lane East Stoke, Newark, Nottinghamshire.
A ditch recorded in the base of the trench was sealed by a 0.25m thick subsoil. The latter deposit may be a plough soil, indicating that the ditch may be of some antiquity although its alignment matches the layout of boundaries in the modern landscape. No artefacts were recovered from the ditch or the overlying subsoil and topsoil. The ditch is probably the remains of an enclosure or boundary feature located on the periphery of the village core. However, as the ditch is sealed beneath a possible ploughsoil there is a possibility that it is of pre-medieval date The latest deposits were modern hardstanding.
