Description
The PDA is located to the southeast of Ruddington village centre, and to the east of Loughborough Road comprising approximately 3ha in size. The southern two-thirds of the PDA comprise mostly grass pasture with areas of overgrowth, while the Croft and its surrounding gardens occupy the remaining northern portion. The site is flanked by residential developments to its north and south and borders arable farmland to the east. Access to the survey area was gained via a gated metalled drive running from the northwest corner of the property to the front of the main building.
The survey was undertaken using Bartington Grad601 magnetic gradiometers. These were employed taking readings at 0.25m intervals on zig-zag traverses 1.0m apart within 30m by 30m grids, so that 3600 readings were recorded in each grid.
The geophysical survey has detected a handful of anomalies with an uncertain origin which are likely to be associated with former boundaries, geological or agricultural activity. An archaeological origin has not been ruled out entirely but this is tentative at best.
Three former field boundaries have been recorded which correspond to historic mapping. The majority of the anomalies recorded are associated with a modern origin. The former field boundaries are shown on historic mapping dating from 1914.
Based on the geophysical survey the archaeological potential of the PDA is deemed to be low.
