Description

The site, approximately 5.5ha in extent, is located on the northeast side of Kirlington Road at the southern end of the historic village, an area known as Bilsthorpe Moor. The site has been previously developed as the factory of Noble Foods, the former factory buildings demolished in 2015/16. The brownfield site has remained unused since then, but is occupied by a number of dry ponds etc. The evaluation comprised fifteen 30m x 2m trenches. Taking the maximum recorded topsoil/subsoil depth - 0.35m below existing ground level and presumed roughly consistent across the site - and the impact depths of the construction/demolition cuts in ten of the evaluation trenches - 0.20m < 1.20m below exist ground level - it is considered likely that any shallow features that lay in the centre-west of the site have been lost. However the lack of features in the east side of the site suggests this area was void of any buried remains even prior to the construction/demolition impacts of the factory. The evaluation has therefore identified the east side of the site as the only area where modern activity has not impacted on the natural stratigraphy, and therefore the only area where archaeological features may have survived. These trenches were also void of any archaeological remains, thus the site is considered negative of any archaeological features.
