Description

Old Gateford Road is at the northwestern edge of Worksop, c. 2.5km from the town centre. The proposed development site is on the north side of Old Gateford Road. A strip was made of two plots in 2015, which had become overgrown by the time the site work was recommenced in 2017, thereby necessitating a re-strip of this area. Areas were stripped by a 360° mechanical excavator under archaeological supervision. Following excavation, the base and sides of the excavated areas were examined for potential archaeological features. The earliest layer included a sherd 15th-16th century pottery and a sherd of 17th – 18th century pottery. This was overlain by a dumped (possibly levelling) layer. Over this was a further layer of probable made ground. This contained post medieval and early modern pottery and appeared to have been put down as levelling prior to the construction of the stone walls which bounded the track off Old Gateford Road as well as the sheds which were extant to the northwest and southwest of the smithy prior to the commencement of the groundworks in 2015. Outbuildings are evident in this area on the first available OS maps from the late 19th century, but it is not known when they were originally constructed. The inclusion of a small amount of post-medieval and early modern pottery in lone layer which appeared to predate the walls, indicates that it was at least partially quite late in date. A different sequence of deposits was observed in the last section. Here the made ground was overlain by a possible former topsoil , which was beneath a levelling layer of crushed limestone, and a further levelling layer of a mix of soil and gravel. Aside from one sherd of late medieval pottery, there were no features or finds to indicate any earlier activity in the environs of the site.
