Abstract/Summary
A programme of monitoring and recording was carried out on land at Old Gateford Road, Worksop, Nottinghamshire.
The site is archaeologically sensitive; separate discoveries comprising a Neolithic stone axe and worked flints have been made within 1km of the site. Late Iron Age to Romano British enclosures have been excavated to the north of the site, and a Romano British enclosure has been excavated to the east. The
development area lies east of the site of the medieval manor house at Gateford (which was later redeveloped as a farmhouse) and just to the west of a cluster of buildings which date from the 18th century. At the western edge of these buildings is a smithy, which is to be redeveloped. OS maps from
the late 19th century depict the smithy, accessible from Old Gateford Road via a track, and un-named outbuildings to its northwest and southwest. The track was bounded by a stone wall, separating it from the small field to the west.
The monitoring revealed several dumped deposits, which appeared to predate the recently demolished stone boundary walls and sheds/outbuildings. Pottery retrieved from these layers ranged in date from late medieval to early modern.
There were no features or finds to indicate any earlier activity in the environs of the site.
