Description

The excavation area (Area B) is located at the eastern side of the outline planning application area (AA), within a single large arable field at a height of approximately 50m above Ordnance Datum (AOD). The AA is bound to the north and east by the A57, with the village of Shireoaks to the south and further agricultural land to the west. The archaeological mitigation excavation comprised a square area in the east of the AA (Area B) measuring 1,065m2 which was positioned to investigate a possible prehistoric ring-ditch that was initially identified on the geophysical survey and thought to have been partially identified by archaeological trial trench evaluation. The excavation area was crossed by an 11Kv overhead powerline and therefore a 12m buffer zone beneath the powerlines remained unexcavated. Excavation of Area B has identified two parallel, shallow linear ditches which broadly correspond with the location of a possible ring-ditch identified by geophysical survey and trial trench evaluation. The excavation has confirmed that the ditches are separate, parallel linear features and do not form part a ring-ditch. No dating evidence was retrieved from either ditch. A single very shallow pit is tentatively interpreted as being of possible archaeological origin but contained no dating material. Evidence of agricultural activity in the form of a furrow and land drains were also identified.
