Description

The site is located to the north-west of the town of Newark-upon Trent in Nottinghamshire and consists of the Newark Cattle Market buildings with a residential dwelling and car parking to the front of the site, adjacent to Great North Road. The Great North Road borders the site on the south-west and the Newark lorry park borders the site immediately to the north and west. Castle House, the Newark and Sherwood District Council head office, lies adjacent to the south-east. A total of 16 window samples were undertaken which were added to an existing deposit model of the site. Cores were also recovered for palaeoenvironmental assessment and dating. The subsequent assessment demonstrated poor microfossil preservation with many of the pollen grains crumpled indicating reworking with a palaeochannel environment. The window sample survey and subsequent deposit modelling has demonstrated that despite the presence of organic deposits at the site, the microfossil potential of the site is low. This is due to the poor preservation of the pollen due to reworking and subsequent drainage of the site. There is still the potential for the channel to preserve organic archaeological remains which may be more robust but no cultural remains were recorded during the survey. The updated model of the deposit at the site also provides a useful indication of the areas of deeper sedimentation.
