Abstract/Summary

A geoarchaeological window sample survey and palaeoenvironmental assessment at the site of the proposed Air and Space Institute (ASI) building on the former site of Newark Cattle Market. A total of 16 window samples were undertaken which were added to an existing deposit model of the site. Cores were also recovered for palaeoenvironmental assessment and dating. The subsequent assessment demonstrated poor microfossil preservation with many of the pollen grains crumpled indicating reworking with a palaeochannel environment. The samples submitted for radiocarbon dating initially suggested a late Mesolithic to Early Bronze date for the sedimentation. However, the discrepancies between the humic and the humin fractions submitted for age determination and the evidence for reworking in the pollen assemblage indicates this is a less than reliable chronology. The window sample survey and subsequent deposit modelling has demonstrated that despite the presence of organic deposits at the site, the microfossil potential of the site is low. There is still the potential for the channel to preserve organic archaeological remains which may be more robust but no cultural remains were recorded during the survey. The updated model of the deposit at the site also provides a useful indication of the areas of deeper sedimentation.
