Description

The site of the proposed new International Air & Space Training Institute (IASTI) building at the site of former Newark Livestock Market, Unit 1, Newark, Nottinghamshire. The site is located to the north-west of the town of Newark-upon Trent in Nottinghamshire and consists of the Newark Cattle Market buildings with a residential dwelling and car parking to the front of the site, adjacent to Great North Road. The Great North Road borders the site on the south-west and the Newark lorry park borders the site immediately to the north and west. Castle House, the Newark and Sherwood District Council head office, lies adjacent to the south-east. Four test pits were monitored during excavation on 15th December 2021 to c. 3.00m BGL and the data combined with supplemental GI logs from five boreholes drilled across the Site. Visual assessment and interpretation of the deposits directly observed, as well as the information provided in the borehole logs, indicates that Site overlies a likely former course or channel of the River Trent. Bulk grab samples were obtained from the base of two test pits where palaeochannel deposits were identified. The age and significance of these deposits is unknown, but given their characteristics and lithology, have high potential to preserve palaeoenvironmental proxy, as well as potential waterlogged archaeological, remains.
