Abstract/Summary
Geoarchaeological monitoring of test pits was undertaken as part of a wider suite of Ground Investigation (GI) works at the site of former Newark Livestock Market, Newark, Nottinghamshire.
Four test pits were monitored during excavation on 15th December 2021 to c. 3.00m BGL and the data combined with supplemental GI logs from five boreholes drilled across the Site. Visual assessment and interpretation of the deposits directly observed, as well as the information provided in the borehole logs, indicates that Site overlies a likely former course or channel of the River Trent. Limited modelling of the underlying deposits supports this interpretation in addition to the Site proximity to an open drain, likely a relic of the palaeochannel system identified as the Old Trent Dyke, a channel relating to the Trent which was at least partially active until the onset of the Post Medieval period.
Bulk grab samples were obtained from the base of two test pits where palaeochannel deposits were identified. The age and significance of these deposits is unknown, but given their characteristics and lithology, have high potential to preserve palaeoenvironmental proxy, as well as potential waterlogged archaeological, remains.
