Description
The area of interest is now taken up by Toton Manor Farm Recreation Ground, a public space managed by Broxtowe Borough Council and incorporated into Toton Fields, a conservation area managed by Broxtowe Borough Council and Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust. Neither the Manor House nor either of the mills survive as standing remains, but recent investigations have shed light onto the potential of the underground heritage.
A steel hand auger capable of taking 170mm soil cores was used throughout the survey. This was deemed to the most appropriate method of investigating the channels as the soils were, for the most part, relatively soft and conducive to the use of this instrument.
A total of six bore-holes across the four channels were undertaken. The confluences of the channels were avoided as the more dynamic processes around these may present an un-diagnostic sedimentation record. For this reason, more centralised parts of the channels were consistently targeted.
Two supplementary test pits were excavated to accompany the bore-hole survey.
The bore-hole survey used relative deposit modelling, cartographic evidence and diagnostic cultural
material to make broad interpretations about the depositional history and to construct a working
chronology. Overall the survey concluded that two channels are likely to have been in use at the
same time, with one of the channels perhaps acting as a leat and the other channel acting as the race.
The borehole survey indicates that another two channels share enough characteristics to suggest that they were in operation at the same time or perhaps even represent the same landscape feature. Exactly how these features fit into the working industrial landscape is unclear. The answer may lie in the possible presence of an earlier mill within the locality of the park. A scheme of excavation on the suspected site of the mill, expected to be conducted in 2014, may reveal further evidence which may explain the development of these channels in more detail.
