Abstract/Summary

A bore-hole survey within the relict mediaeval/post mediaeval water management system at Toton Manor Farm Recreation Ground, Nottinghamshire. This survey was part of ‘Toton Unearthed’, a Heritage Lottery-funded community archaeology project. A suite of non-intrusive investigations, including LiDAR, topographic and geophysical surveys, have been undertaken at Manor Park as part of Toton Unearthed. The results of the surveys revealed four well defined disused water channels which are largely evident as earthworks. Each of the channels are thought to have either been deliberately constructed or adapted from natural landscape features in order to service medieval/post medieval mills. A greater understanding of the deposit modelling of the channels may contribute towards the advancement of a relative chronology of the use of the water courses and therefore the development of the localised industrial landscape. The bore-hole survey used relative deposit modelling, cartographic evidence and diagnostic cultural material to make broad interpretations about the depositional history and to construct a working chronology. Overall the survey concluded that two channels are likely to have been in use at the same time, with one of the channels perhaps acting as a leat and the other channel acting as the race. The borehole survey indicates that another two channels share enough characteristics to suggest that they were in operation at the same time or perhaps even represent the same landscape feature. Exactly how these features fit into the working industrial landscape is unclear. The answer may lie in the possible presence of an earlier mill within the locality of the park. A scheme of excavation on the suspected site of the mill, expected to be conducted in 2014, may reveal further evidence which may explain the development of these channels in more detail.
