Description
The Proposed Development Area covers an area of 9ha to the immediate north of Retford. It comprises a single, irregular-shaped arable field off Tiln Lane. The site is bounded to the west by Bolham Lane, Tiln Lane to the east, a sewerage farm and fields to the north and residential properties of Badgers Chase to the south.
The site grid was laid out using a Trimble R8s GNSS system. The survey was undertaken using Bartington Grad601 magnetic gradiometers. These were employed taking readings at 0.25m intervals on zig-zag traverses 1.0m apart within 30m by 30m grids, so that 3600 readings were recorded in each grid.
Agricultural responses can be seen within all areas as medieval ridge and furrow, a former field boundary present on OS mapping, and modern field drains. Areas of magnetic disturbance have also been detected across the site.
Possible archaeology has been detected in the western part of the site, which may form a previously undocumented trackway or settlement but overall, based on the geophysical survey, the archaeological potential of the site is deemed to be low.
An evaluation following this geophysical survey found the majority of geophysical survey anomalies located have been identified as modern land drains. This includes the two faint linear anomalies identified as possible archaeology and shown to be land drains.
