Description
The proposed development site is located in Barnstone, in the administrative district of Rushcliffe Borough Council. It is situated 17km southeast of Nottingham and 20km southwest of Newark On Trent. The site is approximately 0.3 hectares in extent and is presently an open agricultural field.
The evaluation consisted of four evaluation trenches spread across the Site targeting the location of the proposed new houses (each trench was 20m x 1.8m c.144m²).
The evaluation revealed finds & deposits dating to the mid to late Iron Age. The ditches located during this evaluation are possibly associated with the cropmark enclosure to the southwest, perhaps reflecting associated activity in this area. Finds recovered from the ditches (pottery and animal bone) were both in a good condition, and further archaeological fieldwork would produce additional evidence for further research. These ditches may be outlining field boundaries, and there is the possibility of further archaeological features (ditches, post-holes etc.) associated with this activity.
