Description

St. Wilfred’s House is a large, detached dwelling located off the west side of Church Lane. It is directly opposite St. Wilfred’s Church, a Grade I Listed Building whose boundary wall is separately Grade II Listed, as is a lamp post within the churchyard. The house is a late 19th century vicarage, built around 1870 of brick with a slate roof, and represents a good example of late Victorian residential architecture. The property is bounded to the north by a field, with a railway line beyond, and by housing to the south. The development site is located at the north side of the grounds of the house, and is under lawn turf, with trees and shrubs along the boundary. A single evaluation trench (8m x 2m) was excavated across the garage plot in order to investigate the potential for and survival of any buried remains that lie within the proposed development area. The trench was opened under archaeological supervision using a mechanical excavator. It was then cleaned manually and inspected for archaeological remains. Despite the archaeological potential of the area, this scheme of evaluation trenching concluded without exposing any significant archaeological finds or features.
