Description

The site is located on the west side of Station Road, south of the village centre. The development site is located on a plot of land lying between North Bar Road to the West and Station Road to the east with access from Station Road between ‘The Ings’ and ‘Martindale’, properties fronting on to Station Rd. The watching brief was carried out between May and June 2007 monitoring the installation of an access road, foul drains and other services. The large number of features and associated volume of finds recovered from this initial work resulted in a revised programme of archaeological investigation that was agreed between the Nottingham County Archaeologist and CPL Developments Ltd. Many features were discovered during both the watching brief and targeted excavation. The complementary artefactual has highlighted the importance of the site which was probably part of one of the manorial properties in the village. The large assemblage of ceramic material from the site is an important contribution to local studies and will provide a good basis for a local reference collection enabling comparative analysis from other sites in the future.
