An archaeological watching brief and excavation were undertaken during the construction of a small residential development. Four late Saxon pits were found and residual Saxon pottery in later features indicates more extensive Saxon occupation. Large 12th century boundary ditches on the northern and eastern boundaries of the site and contemporary internal features of pits and gullies were found. There were no domestic buildings on the site but the presence of medieval bricks and roof tile suggest the presence a house, or houses, of high status nearby. Early post-medieval period cobbled surfaces were possibly associated with a blacksmith’s workshop, with smithing slag and iron nails being present. There were also two wells and several rubbish pits and five cattle burials. The waterlogged deposits in the wells preserved the remains of four shoes and leather off-cuts. The industrial character of the remains and the lack of domestic buildings suggests that the site continued to be on the periphery of occupation. Late 18th century pottery from the site included high quality material, again indicating the proximity of a house of high status. Cartographic evidence confirmed this, showing that the site lay within curtilage of a large house, which at one time belonged to the Lords of the Manor, and clearance of the site may be associated with the known sale of the property not long after Enclosure. Six residual late Neolithic flints were recovered from medieval features and a single late 3rd-century Romano-British pit was also found
