Description

The site is located 0.8km south of the centre of North Muskham, on the west side of Main Street. The magnetic survey was carried out using a dual sensor Grad601-2 Magnetic Gradiometer manufactured by Bartington Instruments Ltd. This records subtle changes in the magnetic field resulting from differing features in the soil. Changes as small as 0.2 nanoTesla (nT) in an overall field strength of c. 49,000nT can be accurately detected using this instrumentation, although in practice instrument interference and soil noise can limit sensitivity. The survey recorded one positive linear anomaly of a possible archaeological origin, which could form part of a field boundary or enclosure. However, it is aligned with the modern agricultural activity on site therefore a more modern resolve cannot be ruled out. Two large positive anomalies along the road side were identified which could resolve as archaeological features, and may form features such as quarry or rubbish pits. Other discrete positive anomalies across the field could possibly represent pit like features. However, these are somewhat isolated and are difficult to interpret on the basis of form alone and difficult to rule out a more natural resolve.
