Description
The extraction quarry is in the parish of Kirton, 1km east of the centre of the village, and approximately
15km to the north-east of Mansfield. The monitored area was 0.84 hectares.
A qualified and experienced field archaeologist was present during topsoil removal to carefully monitor machine removal of deposits down to the first archaeological horizon, and to visually search the exposed subsoil surface for any significant archaeological remains. Sections through archaeological features were excavated and recorded.
A single linear ditch was recorded, running across the watching brief area. Dating evidence was sparse, but this feature is thought to be modern. Other areas of modern disturbance, relating to agricultural drainage, or provision of services, were also noted.
Twelve pottery sherds were recovered as surface finds or from the fills of the excavated ditch. These were mostly post-medieval or modern, but include single sherds of Roman, Late Saxon and medieval date.
