Title Kirton Quarry - Archaeological Watching Brief. New Best Red Quarry Extension: May 2018
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2018

Abstract/Summary

Monitoring of topsoil stripping on a northward extension to the New Best Red Quarry at Kirton Brickworks, Nottinghamshire, was undertaken in May 2018. This extension, to the north and west of the currently active quarry, is subject to new planning consent. Previous investigations have found limited archaeological evidence, most notably the broken-off tip of a Bronze Age flint dagger in 2017, but also including other struck flints and sherds of medieval and post-medieval pottery. A single linear ditch was recorded, running across the watching brief area. Dating evidence was sparse, but this feature is thought to be modern. Other areas of modern disturbance, relating to agricultural drainage, or provision of services, were also noted. Twelve pottery sherds were recovered as surface finds or from the fills of the excavated ditch. These were mostly post-medieval or modern, but include single sherds of Roman, Late Saxon and medieval date.
