Description
The Scheme was situated at Papplewick Pumping Station, 3.5km north-east of Papplewick and 6km north of Nottingham. The works were located within the Scheduled Monument and Registered Park and Garden of Papplewick Pumping Station.
The Scheme was located at the south-eastern corner of the Scheduled area, north of the southern entrance, within a wooded area to the east of the cooling pond of the Pumping Station. It was bound to the east by Rigg Lane and to the south by the driveway to the station. The Pumping Station occupies a c. 3ha flat site enclosed by a brick boundary wall and is bounded by farmland to the north, west and south.
An archaeological watching brief was carried out on all groundworks that may have impacted on archaeological features and deposits.
The watching brief at Papplewick revealed a sandy deposit between natural layers and topsoil which may relate to landscaping of the pumping station grounds during the late 19th century. Finds form the topsoil included ceramics and part of a possible First World War Small Box Respirator.
The archaeological evidence identified and recorded during the work have little potential to contribute towards current archaeological research in the region.
