Title Papplewick Pumping Station, Nottinghamshire: Archaeological Watching Brief.
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2012

Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief and building recording was undertaken to mitigate the potential loss of archaeological remains during groundworks associated with the insertion of a cable trench, sewer pipe and chemical dosing chamber at Papplewick Pumping Station, Nottinghamshire, which is a Scheduled Monument. The Scheme involved the hand excavation of the cable trench and pipe trench at the southeast corner of the Scheduled Area and the flushing out of the existing chambers. The watching brief at Papplewick revealed a sandy deposit between natural layers and topsoil which may relate to landscaping of the pumping station grounds during the late 19th century. Finds from the topsoil included ceramics and part of a possible First World War Small Box Respirator. The archaeological evidence identified and recorded during the work have little potential to contribute towards current archaeological research in the region.
