Description

The watching brief area was located on the churchyard of St Peter’s Church, Clayworth, Nottinghamshire. Clayworth is a small village in Nottinghamshire that lies 16.17 km to the north-east of Worksop. The archaeological watching brief was undertaken on 3rd April 2017 and encompassed the archaeological recording of groundworks relating to the installation of drainage and seven soakaways within the churchyard of St Peter’s Church. The trenches for seven soakaways were situated across St Peter’s churchyard. They measured between 1.2m and 1.4m in depth and 1m and 1.2m in width. At the base of the soakaways, significant quantities of human skeletal remains with fresh breaks were identified and had been placed in the base of the sondages by the groundworks contractors as having come from the excavation of that soakaway. These remains were not quantified or analysed but were returned as per instruction to the Church for reburial. No grave cuts were identified in section.
