Date/Year | 2017 |
Abstract/Summary
Seven drainage soakaways had been excavated in the churchyard of St Peter’s Churchand revealed a substantial quantity of human skeletal remains. Attending the site of works on 3rd April, the monitoring archaeologist recorded the disturbance caused by these works as much as possible.
The stratigraphic sequence of deposits in the pits for the soakaways was recorded. The skeletal human remains, which were disarticulated, were not quantified and were returned to the church for reburial. No grave cuts were identified in section which would indicate that the top and subsoils had been heavily disturbed by repeated burials in the churchyard.
