Description
The site is located to the north of Bank Hill, Woodborough, Nottinghamshire. The survey area is approximately 6.1 hectares, however areas of woodland, overgrown vegetation, and polytunnels reduced the surveyable area to approximately 4.3 hectares of generally flat grassland.
The magnetic survey was carried out using a dual sensor Grad601-2 Magnetic Gradiometer manufactured by Bartington Instruments Ltd. Readings were taken at 0.25m centres along traverses 1m apart. This equates to 3600 sampling points in a full 30m x 30m grid.
The survey at Woodborough has not identified any anomalies of archaeological origin. This is in keeping with the known history of the site and surrounding area. There is no evidence of the bridge listed on Sanderson's map, although the bridge structure is likely to be closer to the stream than the survey was able to get. Weak evidence of ridge and furrow cultivation suggests that the area has been used for agriculture since the medieval period. The remaining anomalies are modern in origin, relating to made ground, scattered magnetic debris, ferrous objects, and fencing.
