Description
The site is east of the A611 and B6011, north of Hucknall with Wighay Road forming the southern boundary of the site. The survey area is approximately 4.5 hectares of harvested arable land with wheat stubble and straw across the site. The ground is slightly undulating and there are no obstructions present.
The magnetic survey was carried out using a dual sensor Grad601-2 Magnetic Gradiometer manufactured by Bartington Instruments Ltd. Readings were taken at 0.25m centres along traverses 1m apart. This equates to 3600 sampling points in a full 30m x 30m grid.
The survey at Wighay Road, Hucknall has identified a small number of features of possible archaeological origin. Positive linear features in the north of the survey area are possible cut features of archaeological origin. The former field boundary that is not evident on existing historic mapping and the parallel linear anomalies that are present across the majority of the site provide evidence of extensive agricultural activity on the site. A former trackway has also been identified. An area of amorphous magnetic variation to the north of the site is likely to be natural related to the adjacent spring. The remaining features are associated with nearby ferrous metal objects and modern rubbish. All results, apart from the field boundary, are either interpreted as modern or agricultural.
