Description
The scheme area is located to the southwest of Eastwood and Newthorpe, Nottinghamshire, approximately 10km northwest of central Nottingham, and is centred on two main areas: Tinsley Road, Heanor and Halls Lane, Newthorpe.
The excavations within the first area consisted of six test pits, each approximately 1m wide, 7m long and dug to a depth of around 3m. Those within the second area consisted of a single strip approximately 135m long and 18m wide, dug to a depth of around 0.3m.
Although there was potential for some archaeological features to be uncovered during these works, nothing of significance was observed. Instead, in the first area, topsoil sealed several alluvial layers and a deposit of coal.
The excavation carried out in the second area showed topsoil sealed a thin layer of modern dumped material, likely associated with the industrial processes taking place in the vicinity during the 18th and 19th centuries, such as the extraction and transport of coal.
No field boundaries or ridge and furrow were observed.
