Abstract/Summary

Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken at land adjacent to Tinsley Road, Heanor, and Halls Lane, Newthorpe, prior to the installation of a wastewater pipeline connecting the Newthorpe water treatment works (WTW)) with Heanor Milnhay WTW. The site lies within an area of low archaeological potential. Although some prehistoric evidence has been uncovered within a 1km radius surrounding the scheme area, none was noted within the scheme area itself. The route of the proposed pipeline runs through an area of medieval ridge and furrow as well as several field boundaries, however, much of this has been disturbed by mining carried out in the 18th and 19th Century. Two areas were monitored. The first area was at Tinsley Road, Heanor and the second area was at Halls Lane, Newthorpe. The monitoring did not encounter any archaeologically significant finds, features or deposits in either area. Instead, a thin layer of modern industrial material was observed in the second area, towards Newthorpe, which contained modern red brick fragments and glazed pottery. Alluvial layers were observed in both areas.
