Description
The site is located in the parish of Torworth, 2.5km northwest of the centre of Barnby Moor, on the south side of the Retford Road. The proposed development area encompasses some 14.3 hectares.
The magnetic survey was carried out using two dual sensor Grad601-2 Magnetic Gradiometer manufactured by Bartington Instruments Ltd.
Readings were taken at 0.25m centres along traverses 1m apart. This equates to 6400 sampling points in a full 40m x 40mgrid. The Grad 601 has a typical depth of penetration of 0.5m to 1.0m although a greater range is possible where strongly magnetic objects have been buried in the site.
One positive anomaly of clear archaeological origin has been identified. This forms a possible rectangular enclosure, which perhaps dates to the Roman period. While discrete positive anomalies around the enclosure possibly represent pits of an archaeological nature, the more isolated anomalies are more likely to be geological in origin.
Previous desk-based research identified cropmarks of an apparent Roman-period field system to the east of the site. These cropmarks do not appear to extend into the proposed development area, and were not identified by the geophysical survey. It is possible that field system remains responsible for the cropmark formation seen to the east are not present in the proposed development area, or perhaps are masked by later activity (eg, later field systems or colluvial deposits in the dry valley). However, the enclosure recorded by the geophysical survey may be related to and contemporary with the field system cropmarks.
Other features represent an old watercourse and possible evidence of ridge and furrow cultivation. Several of these linear ridge and furrow anomalies coincide with the locations of former field boundaries of the medieval strip field system.
