Abstract/Summary
Detailed magnetic gradiometer survey was undertaken in connection with a proposed solar farm on land off Retford Road, Barnby Moor, Torworth, Nottinghamshire. The survey totalled c. 14.3ha. Previous research had identified cropmarks of a probable Roman field system a little to the east and north. Additionally, historic maps record that the site was previously divided by curvilinear boundaries that are likely to represent a medieval field system.
One positive anomalies of clear archaeological origin has been identified. This forms a possible rectangular enclosure, which perhaps dates to the Roman period. While discrete positive anomalies around the enclosure may represent pits of an archaeological nature, the more isolated anomalies are more likely to be geological in origin.
Other features represent possible evidence of ridge and furrow cultivation, with several of these anomalies coinciding with the mapped locations of the removed boundaries of the medieval field system. A former watercourse was also identified.
