Description
The proposed development site is located at the southern edge of Fernwood, directly to the south of Hollowdyke Lane. The area of investigation is currently divided into three by land boundaries and consists of one large field with two smaller fields to the east. The survey area totalled c. 17.4ha.
A magnetic gradiometry survey was carried out with a Bartington Grad 601-2 fluxgate magnetometer. The fields were divided into 40m2 grids and each grid was walked systematically in a zigzag pattern, taking readings every 0.25m in traverses 1m apart.
The most prominent feature recorded in the survey is the medieval or post-medieval ridge and furrow. These largely sit comfortably within the historically recorded boundaries although a few of the ENE-WSW furrows appear to cross the field boundaries and may be a remnant of a pre-enclosure field system. A break between the two orientations of furrows towards the middle of the field may indicate a field boundary that had been removed before the earliest OS map was drawn.
Several anomalies may indicate the presence of features that predate the ridge and furrow. The sinuous linears are likely to be geological. At the western edge of the survey a small 15m diameter circular anomaly which is superficially similar to the Iron Age ring ditches discovered in geophysical surveys to the south, although the signal is extremely weak and it may be a product of interference in the data. At the middle of the site is a large oval anomaly and three straight linears. These may represent a complex of features, but equally could be caused by a geological disturbance, such as limestone cracking.
The two eastern-most fields in the survey were largely obscured by modern features, namely a large service pipe and a possible scatter of green manure contaminated with shredded metallic particles.
