Description
The development is situated 1.7km south of Rufford near Stud Farm. The site of the lagoon lies on former arable that has been left fallow.
The area of the lagoon and its banks (c. 7935.28m²) was stripped of topsoil by a bulldozer pushing the topsoil outside the site limits and then mounding the subsoil and natural to form the banks.
A single probable posthole containing a large packing or pad stone was identified, but no associated features or other archaeological remains were recognised. It is possible that the large stone was a natural erratic, though there are no drift deposits which might normally contain such material recorded for the area. The probable posthole was isolated and no obvious associated features were observed. It is therefore unclear if the posthole represents one element of a fence or a single post.
Pottery of 19th-20th century date was recovered from the topsoil. These artefacts probably entered the area in manuring scatter, suggesting the site was arable land in this period.
An earthwork boundary, comprised of a ditch flanked by two banks, was observed to the south of the development area. This earthwork probably represents a boundary of the post-medieval deer park.
