Description
The site is located 1.3km southwest of the centre of Bilsthorpe, as defined by the parish church of St Margaret, to the east of Old Rufford Road.
Archaeological monitoring was carried out on groundworks for the solar farm. The stripping of topsoil for three inverter pads was initially monitored although not all the topsoil was removed. Monitoring of the excavation of the cable trenches was then carried out. Selected sides of the trenches were cleaned and recorded.
The monitoring and recording revealed only a sequence of natural and topsoil deposits. No archaeological remains were identified.
However, the monitored cable trenches did not, for the most part, cross the lines of the cropmarks and the geophysical anomalies. Moreover, where the cable trenches did cross the lines of the archaeological features, identified by geophysics or as cropmarks, they did so mostly on oblique traverses. This, together with the general narrowness of the trenches, would compromise identification of archaeological features.
No finds were retrieved during the investigation.
