Description
The site is located on the edge of Elston Parish, 1km east of the A46 and approximately 5.8 miles southwest of Newark-on-Trent. The survey area was bounded by arable land to the west, a playing field to the north, and Lodge Lane to the south. At the time of survey, the site was under arable use, with a narrow belt of mature trees running parallel to Lodge lane. The northern boundary consists of a small hedgerow with a small sub-station located in the far east corner.
Magnetic survey - BartingtonInstruments Grad-13 Digital Three-Axis Gradiometer - Traverse: 1m - Sample Interval: 200Hz reprojected to 0.125m.
The results reveal a relatively quiet magnetic background, with the impact of modern activity limited to the edges of the field; although the response from the sub-station in the corner of the field has produced a broad magnetic ‘halo’ that will inhibit the detection of any potential weaker signals in close proximity. No anomalies of a possible or probable archaeological origin have been identified. The results reflect agricultural and modern activity.
Agricultural activity has been identified in the form of weak ploughing trends that run parallel to the site’s eastern and western boundaries. The direction of these responses runs in-line with recent ploughing, as well as ridge and furrow cropmarks. The ridge and furrow has been subsequently truncated by later activity, which would account for the poor detection in the geophysical results.
Modern activity is represented by ferrous anomalies. Broad ferrous responses located along the southern, eastern and continuing along the northern boundary are concurrent with the wire fence bounding the field and the iron railing fence surrounding the sub-station. A large magnetic response appearing on the western boundary may represent a small pervious structure or pond, visible on historic maps.
